American Education Services Sponsors HBCU Campus Visits
Black Achievers Program Aids Students Interested in Higher Education

Harrisburg, PA (April 20, 2007) - American Education Services (AES) announced today that it has provided a $1,500 sponsorship for students to participate in a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Spring college Tour offered by the Camp Curtin Branch of the Harrisburg, PA YMCA’s Black Achievers Program.

The HBCU Spring College Tour is offered to students in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in attending a Historically Black College or University. Approximately 50 students participated in the school visits which began on April 9 and ran through April 14. School visits included Morgan State University, Shaw University, Clark Atlanta University, Fayette State University, Bowie State University, St. Augustine College, Morehouse College, Winston Salem State University, Johnson C. Smith University, North Carolina A&T University, Howard University, Bennett College, Spellman College and North Carolina Central University.

“This program is a great match with one of our primary goals, which is getting students interested and involved in planning their higher education,” said Dick Willey, AES President and CEO. “The Black Achievers Program is providing a great service in preparing young people to better themselves and focus on achieving success in life. We also recognize the important role that HBCUs play in providing young African-Americans and other minority populations with a great education option when making their school choice.”

The Black Achievers Program offers a series of classes and educational events, based on grade level, to provide students with the information they need to evaluate career options, make informed college choices and understand the expectations of the workplace.

AES provides instructors for the program’s Saturday classes, held at Harrisburg Area Community College, on a variety of topics including resume writing, presentations skills, career and college planning and finding affordable ways to pay for it. AES also assists the Black Achievers Program by organizing job-shadowing opportunities, internships for high school and college students, and mentoring for student interns.

“Creating a partnership with the Black Achievers Program demonstrates our commitment to providing access to education. This program creates an additional avenue for students to learn more about Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said William Lindsey, AES National Business Development Group’s HBCU Liaison.
