Important Update
Our Tax Policy Has Changed
In the past, you may have received tax forms from AES. This year, we will only mail tax forms if you paid $600.00 or more in interest or had $600.00 or more of your debt cancelled.
What's Changing?
In previous years, AES mailed paper 1098-E Student Loan Interest statements and 1099-C Cancellation of Debt forms with the amount we reported to the IRS on your student loan. AES mailed these tax forms each January to anyone who was the primary borrower on the loan (not an endorser, co-signer, or co-maker) if:
- More than $5.00 in interest was paid on the loan, or
- More than $5.00 of the borrower's student loan debt was cancelled, typically through a loan forgiveness or loan rebate program
This year, AES will only be reporting amounts of $600.00 or more to the IRS. In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, AES will only mail tax forms to the primary borrower on the loan (not an endorser, co-signer, or co-maker) if:
- $600.00 or more in interest was paid on the loan, or
- $600.00 or more of the borrower's student loan debt was cancelled, typically through a loan forgiveness or loan rebate program
AES will not mail you a tax form if your interest paid or cancelled debt was less than $600.00. Instead, your 2008 tax information will only be available online.
How Will This Affect Me?
Don't worry if you don't get a tax form from AES in the mail. Even if AES does not report to the IRS the amount of interest you paid or the amount of debt you had cancelled, we know you still need this information for filing your 2008 income taxes. That's why it is available online.
